Windows 2000 Pro Setup Walkthrough
These instructions are proposed to help our customers running Windows 2000 to configure a connection with SupraLink Solutions. 

Configuring and Running PPP with Dialup Networking
using Windows 2000 Pro

Please follow the next steps. You may have to read the following addendum.

Addendum I: Adding A Modem To Windows 2000 Pro
Addendum II: Adding TCP/IP

Note: If you are uncertain whether or not your modem is installed,
see Addendum I: Adding A Modem to Windows 2000 Pro.

1.  Go to the taskbar and start up the Control Panel.

You'll see the following window.

2.  Double-click on Phone and Modem. You will see the Phone And Modem Options window. You are ready to specify dialing rules.

3.  From Dialing Rules, under Locations, highlight the location from which you will be dialing, i.e. New Location. Click on Edit. If there is no entry under Locations, click on New instead. You should see the following Edit Location window.

4.  Under General from the Edit Location window, follow the next steps.

  • If you click on New from the previous screen, under Location name, type a name, such as SupraLink.

  • Under Area code, type the area code from which you will be dialing. For example, if your number is 908-xxx-xxxx, you should type 908 in the Area Code field.

  • If you have Call waiting option and you don't want the tone to disrupt your modem connection, you can disable the Call waiting. Check the option that says To disable call waiting, dial. To the right of this, click on the down arrow key and select *70.

Your screen now looks like the following if you have disabled the call waiting.

If you don't have call waiting, your screen should look like the following window.

5.  Click on Area Code Rules from Edit Location window. Your screen looks like the following window.

6.  If you never have defined any area code rule, there should be nothing in the box under Area code rules. Click on New to continue. If there is already an entry under Area code rules and you want to make changes, highlight the entry and click on Edit. You will then see the New Area Code Rule window:

7.  From the New Area Code Rule window, follow the next steps.

  • In the Area code box, type the area code from which you will be calling.

  • Under Prefixes, Include all the prefixes within this area code should be checked in a normal situation. If you need to use something else, click on Include only the prefixes in the list below and add the prefixes you want to include.

  • Under Rules, if you are dialing long distance, check Dial and type 1 there.

  • Under Rules, Include the area code must be checked if you live in an area where you are required to use 10 digit dialing to connect to SupraLink Solutions dialup numbers.

Your screen now looks like the following window.

8.  Click on OK three times to save the settings and exit Phone and Modem Options window. You are ready to configure your dialup connections.

From Control Panel, double-click on Network and Dialup Connections. You'll see the following window.

9.  Double-click on Make New Connection. You should then see the following window.

10.  Click on Next. You will then see the following window. Select the first option, Dialup to private network, so that your screen looks like the one below.

11.  Click on Next. You are ready to specify the phone number. First click on the Use dialing rules box. Enter the area code and phone number that you wish to connect to. Your screen should look like the following window, such as 735-8868, 735-7889 or 735-9430.

12.  Click on Next. You should then see the following window. You may select either For all users or Only for myself. In either case the connection will work.

13.  Click on Next. You should see the following window.

14.  You will now create a name for your new dialup connection icon. The box under Type the name you want to use for this connection is highlighted. Enter a name of your choice, for example, SupraLink.

Check the box next to Add a shortcut to my desktop. Click on Finish. You should then see the following window.

15.  Click on Properties. You will then see the following window.

16.  Click on Networking. You will then see the following window.

Note: If you DO NOT see Internet Protocol TCP/IP listed, under Components checked are used by this connection, see Addendum II: Adding TCP/IP.

Uncheck Client for Microsoft Networks as in the picture above. Be sure that Internet Protocol TCP/IP is highlighted. Click on Properties. You should then see the following window.

Obtain an IP address automatically should be selected, and Obtain DNS server address automatically should be selected too, as in the picture above.

17.  Click on Advanced. Your screen should look like the following window.

18.  Click on DNS. You should see something like the following window.

Select Append these DNS suffixes (in order), as in the picture above. Click on Add. You should see the following window.

Type supralink.net so that your screen looks like the following window.

Click on Add. You will be back to the Advanced TCP/IP Settings window. Click on OK.

19.  You are now back at the Internet Protocol TCP/IP Properties window. Click on OK. This will bring you back to the Dialup Connection window. Click on OK. This will finally bring you back to the Connect window, where you should see something like the following window.

Note: You will have to follow the above procedure to create an icon for each telephone dialup number. 

  • Type in your username as follows depending on your system: your_username@your_system_name

  • Type in the password associated with the account you have just entered

Note: The Save Password box may be checked if you have a secure computer. If the box is checked, you will not have to enter your password for each connection. If you are using a public accessible machine you should not check this box.

20.  Click on Dial. The modem will now begin to dial the number and you will begin to see the status of the dialing, connection, and verification of your account.

Once the modem establishes a connection, you will see a dialog box, similar to the one below pop up on your screen. Check the option Do not display this message again and then click on OK.

The final box will show the followings. 

  • Connected to xxxx

  • Connected at modemspeed

  • Duration:  timeconnected

Italicized items are dependent on your equipment and the telephone number dialed. In some cases the final box will appear minimized in the right hand side, the status area of the taskbar.

You are now connected to SupraLink Solutions.

21.  If you have a Web browser such as Netscape or Internet Explorer, you can start the program.

Addendum I: Adding A Modem To Windows 2000 Pro
Please follow the next steps.

1.
  Go to the task bar and start up the Control Panel.

You'll see the following window.

2.  Double-click on Phone and Modem Options. You'll see the following window.

Click on Modems. You should see the following window.

Note: If there is no modem installed you will see picture 2a, click on Next, then go to Step 3. If there is a modem installed you will see picture 2b.

Note: Your modem may not be a Courier. It may be any variety of modems. If you see the correct modem listed, click on Cancel. If you do not see your modem listed, then click on Add.

3.  You'll see the following screen while Windows tries to detect your modem.

If the computer finds a modem, go to Step 4.

If the computer does not find a modem, go to Step 5.

4.  If the computer finds a modem, follows the next steps.

The Found New Hardware Wizard will start and you will see the following picture. Click on Next.

The computer should show you the modem it detected. Select Search for a suitable driver for my device (recommended), and then click on Next.

Note: In the following picture a Courier modem is displayed. Your modem may not be a Courier.

Windows will then ask you about the drivers for your modem. By default it will look in its driver database, but it can also look in a location that you specify. If you have the original drivers that came with your modem, or if you have the latest drivers from your manufacturer's website, you may specify a location.

Windows will then display the results of its search. Click on Next.

Click on Next. Go to Step 6.

5.  If the computer does not find the modem, follow the next step.

You will see following picture which indicates one of two things: there is no modem or the modem is not recognized by Windows 2000. In either case, click on Next.

You will see the following window.

Select your modem by choosing the company in the left window and the modem type in the right window. If your modem is not listed, or if you have an installation disk, click on Have Disk. If you do not know which modem you have, contact your dealer or look in your modem manual. Click on Next.

6.
  You'll see the following window.

7.  Click on Finish. Your modem has been installed.

Addendum II: Adding TCP/IP
You are currently at the Networking tab under Dialup Connection Properties. Uncheck Client for Microsoft Networks. If you DO NOT see the Internet Protocol TCP/IP, as in the picture below, do the following to add the protocol.

1.  Click on Install. You'll see the following window.

2.  Click on Protocol and click on Add. You'll see the following window.

3.  Select Internet Protocol TCP/IP and click on OK.

At this point, you will be at the Network Window. Your screen should look like the one below. Internet Protocol TCP/IP has been installed.
